Larry Koster

In Memoriam

1956-2023

Guiding Since:  1984

Larry grew up in Northern Michigan and moved to Oregon in 1981.  In 1983, he got invited on an early spring trip on the Owyhee, his first real raft trip. This new way of seeing the out-back was really intriguing  and he bought a raft the next year. Larry ended up guiding a few trips that year (1984) in between guiding backpack and long distance bike trips. He realized he could eat much better on raft trips and started guiding full time with Ouzel in 1995. For many years, guiding was a joyful break from construction jobs, where his cabinet-making skills were constantly challenged, as well as fixing up his 120 year-old farmhouse in Ashland. Larry enjoyed traveling with his wife, Sylvia, and avoiding repairs on their house. Larry maintained that you can't be a real river pirate unless you have a parrot. Larry and his wife had a beautiful pet parrot named Alma for 24 years that enjoyed road trips and camping with them. Larry has touched the lives of countless people, and has left an indelible mark on Ouzel's culture and every guide who met him.

Connor Loza

In Memoriam

1993-2022

Guiding Since: 2016

Connor was kind-hearted, hilarious and you couldn’t help but love the guy for the honest and authentic person he was. He was an incredibly charming human and is greatly missed by so many.

Connor’s true passion was being on the river, and being a river guide. As a six-year-veteran at Ouzel Connor was as much a member of the Ouzel family as those who have been around much longer. Much has been written about the “band of brothers” and “fox-hole-solidarity” of soldiers. River guiding is not so different, and many of us spent time in “river foxholes” with Connor. The solidarity, familiarity and friendships that come from that last a lifetime.

We will continue to remember Connor over the coming years and beyond as he left a legacy of “Connorisms” and provided not only outstanding customer service but sincere experiences on the river for our guests. Cheers to Connor, we know he is floating on a river somewhere in the sunshine.
