Interesting Geology on the John Day River

Interesting Geology on the John Day River

This 4-day trip explores the 45-miles section between Service Creek and Clarno. This section of the John Day offers diverse geology with columnar basalt monoliths, towering buttes and the eroded red & green soils of ancient fossil-rich ecosystems common to nearby John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The John Day River and its colorful landscape is a photographer’s paradise. Maroon-and gold-striped Painted Hills. Green-tinged fluted cliffs and unique rock formations. Wildflowers and wildlife. Perfectly dark Milky-Way skies. And the flowing river itself wrapping this all together. On this trip you’ll shoot landscapes, macro-photography, wildlife, and, importantly, the night sky, (and other “quiet light” images). You’ll get individual photographic coaching to sharpen your skills, and connect you with this extraordinary geologic landscape. We provide all of your camping and rafting gear and the guides prepare and serve delicious meals served on full-sized banquet tables. This trip is a unique opportunity to relax, learn and wonder. Author, photographer and Naturalist Ellen Morris Bishop provides interpretation every step of the way.
